The landscape architect Humphry Ripton inspired Thomas Jefferson’s design for his Monticello. Both have a soft transition from flower bed, wood, and lawn. Jefferson spoke of the English gardens as being his favourite after he and John Adams spent a holiday in England touring gardens.
