A timeworn pilgrim tradition is to place your hand in the Tree if Life in the central column of the Door of Glory, Portico de Gloria. Millions of pilgrims over the century have worn holes in the solid marble as a mark of gratitude for their safe arrival.
Traditionally pilgrims touch their brow to the stone carving of the cathedral’s architect Maestro Mateo’s brow to receive some of his artistic genius.
Another tradition is to knee before the casket containing the relics of Saint James and offer prayer.
