Bamboo Forest –  April 16, 2025

  • Location:  Kyoto – Day 3
  • Walk:  Kyoto
  • Weather:  50-65°/ sunshine and clouds mixed, winds  10-15 mph

Having walked through natural bamboo forests on Shikoku, the cultivated Bamboo Garden was too orderly. Gone were all the small plants that thrive in a bamboo habitat.

Nothing but bamboo. Tenryu-ji Garden.
Bamboo Skyscrapers. Tenryu-ji Garden.
Great face…which one? Tenryu-ji Garden..

Three excellent musicians played traditional Japanese music with the American spiritual Amazing Grace and the classic Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme by Simon and Garfunkel added to the mix.

Rub rabbit’s head for good luck.

Wishful Thinking–  March 17, 2025

  • Kumano Kodo: Day 3 /Hongu Taisha Shrine to Koguchi
  • Distance: 8.2 mi
  • Total mileage:  32 miles
  • Ascent:  1,797’ / Descent: 1,804’
  • Time: 5h 30m (moving 4h 15m)
  • Weather: 35-50° /  partly sunny & winds 10-20mph

Today’s clearer skies reveal Kumano Kodo’s mountains. I thought I was finally getting stronger walking legs until I discovered the mileage, ascent, and time were a fraction of the past days. Wishful thinking has thoughts of lower mountains, stronger legs.

Statuary from Temizuya, water purifying station before entering temple.
Looks familiar?
Magnificent views require strong legs.

Satin’s Ascent –  March 15, 2025

  • Kumano Kodo: Day 1 / Takijiri-Oji to Nonaka
  • Distance: 11.3mi

  • Ascent:  3,410’ / Descent: 2,136’
  • Time: 7h 40m (moving 6h)
  • Weather: 45-55° /  light rain

The walk started with a two hour brutal 1,000’ ascent in less than a mile.  I am reminded of a quote by George Ticknor, “The ascent of this steep, savage, hill was as pensive and slow as Satin’s ascent to paradise.”

Savage hills.
Saburo walks with umbrella while Namiyo and I use walking poles.
Saburo and Linda climbing.
Saburo uses camp stove to cook dehydrated packets of curried rice for lunch. Totally unexpected!

Catherine and Denis are exceptional hosts who generate stimulating conversations and serve an excellent dinner for their guests. Formally a barn , their home is exquisite. Denis and his dog gave me a proper send off by walking the first few km with me.
