The 12th century Old Cathedral of Coimbra (Sé Velho de Coimbra) is one of the finest Romanesque churches in Europe. It was the main cathedral-fortress in the Iberian Peninsula.

Beautiful, intricate gold work inside the church!

We did get to Coimbra, and wished that we had spent at least one more night there.

My day in Coimbra was compressed as I wasn’t able to getting a morning train ticket from Lisbon. I’m mastering the art of standing in the wrong line. A wonderful guide at my first stop made me a picture map with four 4 vital pictures and told me exactly what to see at each sight. Having a lovely hand painted Portugués plate sent home to replace the Turkish plate that fell off the wall. Good fortune rains on me. ~linda
