Repatriation – September 14, 2026

  • Venice: Day 4
  • Weather:  65-80° / sunny & winds 5 mph

The magnificent four ancient bronze horses above St Mark’s Basilica were part of the Fourth Crusade booty from Istanbul. They are being preserved indoors.  Should artifacts be repatriated?

  1. I learn that the quadridge was on the Arc of triomphe in Paris between 1797-1815.And yes outside is a reproduction.I don’t know if they have to be restitued.Sure then they are more popular in Venise😊

    1. Bravo Bruno. Yes these four bronze horses taken from Constantinople by Venice were later seized by Napoleon and mounted on the Arc De Triumph du Carrousel. With the defeat of Napoleon the horses were returned to Venice.

  2. The horses were made by the ancient greeks, long before the emperor of Byzance took them to Constantinople ( 450 AD) then brought in Venice in 1204, and even longer before the current government that’s there. So it’s ok for me to give it back to the greek city that built them when the greek antique civilisation will be restored. ;D)
