High Road CONTINUED ~ June 6, 2018

  • Wednesday, June 6, 2018, Day #27
  • Berducedo
  • Distance 17 miles; total 370 miles
  • 3,447’ ascent and 2,469’ descent
  • 5% hard surface
  • Time: 8 hours 30 minutes
  • Weather: 50-60 overcast and misty

The one day 27.5km high route is described as spectacular, rocky path, no mud, and well marked; however, you must be totally self-sufficient as there is no water, no villages, and no food.

The low route can be done in two comfort days with 17.5 and 18km weaving between villages with lots of support and considerable mud.

As the sun was bright and the morning mist clearing, we took the high route. Climbing the views were truly spectacular. Once on the ridge, fog and misty rain dominate the high walk. The spectacular panorama was exchanged for quiet solitude above the tree line. Purple and White Heather dotted the fields. Perhaps the cows found the terrain too steep as they preferred eating lying rather than standing.

It was a full day of walking and worth the extra effort.

Your Choice ~ June 2, 2018

  • Saturday, June 2, 2018, Day #23
  • Grado
  • Distance 16 miles; total 318.5 miles
  • 1,573’ ascent and 2,107’ descent
  • 50% hard surface
  • Time: 6 hours 30 minutes
  • Weather: 50-60 overcast & occasionally sunny

Solphie and I begin our walk. (Sophie requests not to be photographed.) Our choice for today’s distance is 16 beds available in 18 miles. If we go slowly and enjoy the day with a picnic lunch, we will loose out on a bed and have to walk 4 more miles. I don’t like the arrangement; but, there is no choice. We walk fast with no breaks. I’m anxious and my feet rebel. Tomorrow’s is a more generous day with more beds.
