Climbing three hours through dense forrest required my feet to move in a Herring Bone pattern as though on skis. As if skyscrapers, the trees stood straight, massive, and dense blocking sunlight.  Walking six hours of forested mountains showcasing nature was serine.

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd towards Corniolo

Solo walking without conversation, the scenery and sparse sound of birds were better enjoyed. A number of hunters were in the fields with roving dogs driving pheasant from the bush. Through hunters were plentiful on this Sunday morning, I wondered how the Italian women were occupied.

This is  the smallest volcano in Italy. A particular and interesting spectacle but its secret is soon revealed: emissions of gaseous hydrocarbon which in contact with the oxygen from the air remain constantly alight, giving rise to phenomena called “burning fountains”.

Anyone for toasted ing marshmallow over the flame?

  • 2st, 2nd, 3rd approaching Premilcuoe

Cammino Begins ~ September 19, 2015

  • September 19, 2015
  • Day 12
  • Cammino Day 1
  • Capannina
  • 13.2 miles
  • Total assent 3,481, total decent 1,953
  • 7 hours 40 minutes
  • 66-77 degrees

With usual form, the most challenging part of the day was finding the beginning of the Cammino in Dovadola. Today’s walk was a good introduction to the coming days best described as climb up…climb down. Though the walk required effort, my feet felt far worse after a day touring the stone streets of Rome.

Eve of CAMMINO ~ September 18, 2015

  • September 18, 2015
  • Day 11
  • Eve of Cammino
  • Dovadola

Having traveled by car, two trains, bus, and foot I arrived at Dovadola flawlessly thanks to Vieri’s guidance. The refuge is comfortable though my room has a low ceiling. The six Brazilian and one German have taken the other room as they fear bumping their heads.  That leaves me with a private room for 8€.   All share in the excitement of walking the Camino.

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd Dovadola.
