Snafu – Monday, March 25, 2019

  • Monday, March 25, 2019, Day 12
  • Temple # 28
  • Kōnan City, Japan
  • Weather: 50-55 degrees with blue skies becoming overcast
  • Miles 18 (train & car) / Total 139

A snafu happened with my accommodation reservation. When I arrived, all the rooms were occupied and the office closed. Several of the guests helped to locate accommodations at a nearby Airbnb. Quite a feat when you considered they spoke Japanese and I spoke English. Thanks to smartphone technology and google translation my dilemma was solved. A perfect recovery. The Airbnb hostess picked me up and sorted things out most professionally and personable. I could not have asked for a nicer evening.

If Only – March 25, 2019

  • Monday, March 25, 2019, Day 12
  • Temple #28 Kōnan City, Japan
  • Weather: 45-50 degrees, blue skies becoming overcast
  • 19 Miles (train & car) / 139 Total Miles

If only I had packed a bike, I could have ridden this 5-mile cycling road built on the foundation of a former railroad bed. Compared to USA’s Pacific coastline, the waves were smaller and the air didn’t smell briny.

As it so happened, a pleasant reunion with Arnold. The randomness of these encounters always mystified me.

Vet? – March 24, 2019

  • Sunday, March 24, 2019 – Day 11
  • Temples #27
  • Aki City, Japan
  • Weather: 50-55 degrees with blue skies
  • Miles 16.2 (walk & train)/121 Miles

The same cat logo keeps popping up. It’s a cat carrying her kitten using her mouth. Surely it must be a veterinarian’s logo; except, it appears all too frequently. The two Italian women solved the mystery. It’s the logo of a Japanese postal service similar to the American UPS or FedEx.

If only the Henro’s could use it in addition to trains and buses. How much more easy we could move about!

Tote that Pack – March 24, 2019

  • Temples #27
  • Aki City, Japan
  • Weather: 50-55 degrees with blue skies
  • Miles 16.2 (walk & train)/121 Miles

Last night’s hostess went into great detail where to leave backpacks for an out-and-back high hike to Temple #27. As tempting as that sounded, leaving your pack limits options and posses potential problems. The two Italian young women offered company as we plodded upward. The view was well worth the climb.

Tsunami – March 23, 2019

  • Saturday, March 21, 2019 – Day 10
  • Temples #25 and #26
  • Nahari Town, Japan
  • Weather: 45-50 degrees with blue skies with white clouds
  • Miles 14.4/104.8 Miles

Tsunami evacuation signs are seen all along the coast.

The 2011 tsunami resulted in 20,000 deaths. A 2012 simulation tsunami project predicted a huge undersea quake could bring a tsunami as high as 112-feet. Hopefully nature will be kind.
